COLES TRARALGON
Insitu Group was engaged under a Letter of Intent (LOI) and an 8-week Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) period to identify value management opportunities and design efficiencies for a significant Coles development on a 1.97-hectare greenfield site in Traralgon. Designed by Select Architects, the project included the construction of a Coles supermarket, Liquorland, pharmacy, cafe, childcare facility and a carpark, along with the full internal fit out of the Coles supermarket.
This $27 million design and construct (D&C) project for Coles Group Property Developments, in partnership with Building Principals, was successfully completed in August 2024. Delivered in just 11 months, it involved close collaboration with the Coles Development Group, neighbouring developers, and the Latrobe Valley Council, with the scope extending to the construction of new roads and surrounding infrastructure.
Sustainability was a key focus of the project. Notable initiatives included the use of Tonerplas in the asphalt mix for the 225-space carpark. This innovative product, made from recycled toner powder and soft plastics, was provided by Close the Loop Australia, diverting approximately 487,000 pieces of plastic from landfill. Additionally, 565 solar panels were installed in collaboration with Energy Aware, making this the largest solar panel system of any Coles supermarket in Australia, meeting 24.4% of the site's energy needs with renewable electricity generated on-site.
The impressive facility has received unprecedented positive feedback from Latrobe Valley residents, who have praised its design, sustainability, and impact on the community.
